Summer is here and many residents enjoy running, biking and walking on the Pinellas Trail. According to the County website, more than 70,000 people use the trail each month. With such a high volume, it is important to keep trail safety in mind. Check out the list of safety tips below, how many do you follow? • The trail is only open during daylight hours• Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.• Go with a friend if possible• Be aware of your surroundings at all times, walk confidently.• If approached by a stranger, do not allow yourself to be distracted• Look people in the eye as you pass them. This lets others know you are aware of their presence.• If you see a suspicious person, or feel uneasy, turn around and go in the opposite direction. • Report any suspicious person or activity.• Do not wear head phones while exercising. Being able to hear will allow you to sense someone that you may not be able to see such as a passing cyclist. • Bicyclists are not permitted to wear headphones at any time.• Limit carrying items of value on you if possible.• Carry a cell phone in case of emergency.• Wear shoes and clothing that allow freedom of movement.• Obey all posted signs and be aware of areas where trail users do not have the right-of-way due to roadway crossings.• Children under the age of 16 must wear helmets while bicycling• Pets must be kept on a 6-foot leash and under control.• If parking a vehicle, be sure it’s locked and any items of value are not visible.
