Straight out of college in upstate New York, John Yevich made his way to Florida in 1973. Working for the YMCA and in the health club industry, John landed a part time job at the Belleair Recreation Department in 1976. After two years of hard work, John was offered a full time position as the Recreation Director. As the saying goes, ”The rest is history!” When John took over the Belleair Recreation Department a little over thirty years ago, he was the department’s only full time employee. The “Rec” consisted of a small game room, some shuffleboard courts, tennis courts, a little league baseball field, an outdoor basketball court and a playground made up mostly of equipment donated from the back yards of local residents. Most adult and youth programs were held outside or in the Town Hall auditorium. Over the past 30 years, John has worked very hard evolving the Recreation Department into what it is today. He now manages a department with five full time and three part time employees, many volunteers, seasonal employees, sports league referees and contract program instructors. The Belleair Recreation Department has certainly come a long way. Almost daily people come into the Dimmitt Community Center surprised and happy, not only to see that John is still here, but that he looks the same after 30 years! You can still find John playing in the adult basketball group and he still enjoys getting out of the office to help maintain the complex. |
